What is the Consultation About?
The consultation process involves identifying, negotiating and developing an agreed vision for the Proserpine-Shute Harbour Road. As far as practical the agreed vision will incorporate the aspirations of the community, stakeholders and others with an interest in the future of the road.
An agreed vision for the road must meet the current and future transport functions of the road, including all aspects of traffic management, pedestrian and vehicle use and safety. At the same time the agreed vision must address the visual appearance of the road, its aesthetic and design characteristics and its unique potential to reflect the ambience and amenity of the Whitsundays to road users, visitors and the community.
The Project Advisory Committee (PAC)
A Project Advisory Committee has been established to help support the community consultation process. The PAC includes people from:
- Department of Main Roads;
- Queensland Transport;
- Residents Traffic Action;
- Tourism Whitsundays;
- Whitsunday Development Corporation;
- Whitsunday Shire Council;
- Whitsunday Way Advisory Committee; and
- Individuals from the community
The PAC provides advice to the consultants undertaking the community consultation process. This includes:
- Advice on the development and implementation of the community consultation process; and
- Advice and assistance to the consultants in reviewing the outputs from the consultation process.
You do not need to be a member of the PAC to provide input and comments to the consultation process.
What is the Scope of the Project?The Proserpine-Shute Harbour Road includes approximately 35km of road and links the town of Proserpine with the coastal towns of Cannonvale, Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour. It is the major arterial road for transport of goods and services as well as residents and visitors to these areas as well as to the adjacent Whitsunday Islands. While community comment will not be restricted to a particular section of the Proserpine-Shute Harbour Road, a specific focus for the consultation process is that part of the road between the intersections of Tropic Road and Beach Road. How is the Consultation Process to Be Undertaken?The consultation process includes three phases, which provides for:

- Negotiating a shared vision (Phase 2)
(February to March 2008)
Based on a report of the consultation process and outcomes from the first phase, this phase focussed on the negotiation and development of a shared vision for the road. The negotiated vision for the road is available for download below. - Information and negotation sessions (Phase 3)
(from July 2008)
The objective of this phase of the project is to undertake information sessions in relation to key issues and then negotiate agreed treatments for the road. This may include for example negotiating whether traffic lights or roundabouts should be developed at specific intersections or alternate landscaping or pedestrian use.
A Future Vision For Whitsunday Way
The Whitsunday Way will be a safe and efficient road which forms an attractive and welcoming entry statement to the Whitsundays.
The vision has been developed by the Whitsunday community to guide future planning and upgrades of the Whitsunday Way (Proserpine - Shute Harbour Road) from 2008 to 2028.

A consultation strategy has been developed for the project. This strategy outlines the core tasks to be undertaken and the consultation processes to be used. The strategy was developed at the commencement of the project and may change as the project progresses
